Abstract

Grammar teaching is currently in a state of crisis, caught between dissatisfaction with tradition and fear of innovation. Ministerial directives do not help to clarify matters. This paper examines both traditional grammar and Tesnière’s Dependency Grammar, showing some limitations of both and suggesting a new approach to syntax in the light of contemporary research.
