Textual hierarchies and asides. A study on the discourse marker tra parentesi (in brackets).
This paper focuses on a lexical signal available in support of a parenthetical elements, tra parentesi (in brackets), starting from a definition of textual hierarchies and asides. Bracket marks and discourse marker tra parentesi are language tools that involve apparently similar insertions within the textual structure, but may have significant differences as regards the extension of the inserted graft and its relevance with respect to its context. The discourse marker tra parentesi allows to insert a more extended grafts and sometimes a more personal contribution, with production of a thematic deviation that may appear more important than the main text. The author analyses a selection of non-literary examples which mainly present usual uses, and others examples which also illustrate some atypical uses or strongly subject to interpretation, to provide an overview of the many facets of this apparently basic operation for the construction of the discourse. The examples show the connections between the logical-argumentative dimension in which the discourse markers operate and the more widely thematic and enunciative dimension involved in this linguistic phenomenon.
